Optimal Sensor Placement for Source Localization: A Unified ADMM Approach

Source localization plays a key role in many applications including radar, wireless and underwater communications. Among various methods, the most popular ones are Time-Of-Arrival (TOA), Time-Difference-Of-Arrival (TDOA), Angle-Of-Arrival (AOA) Received Signal Strength (RSS) based. Since Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLB) of these methods depend on sensor geometry explicitly, placement becomes crucial issue source applications. In this paper, we consider finding optimal placements for TOA, TDOA, AOA RSS based scenarios. We first unify three models by generalized problem formulation CRLB-related metric. Then unified optimization framework optimal sensor placement (UTMOST) is developed through combination alternating direction method multipliers (ADMM) majorization-minimization (MM) techniques. Unlike majority state-of-the-art works, proposed UTMOST neither approximates design criterion nor considers only uncorrelated noise measurements. It can readily adapt to different criteria (i.e. A, D E-optimality) with slight modifications within framework yield correspondingly. Extensive numerical experiments performed exhibit efficacy flexibility framework.
